Our God Is Righteous
– Psalm Eleven –
"In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart. If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men. The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup. For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright." (Psalms 11:1-7)
David had deep faith in God and he put his trust in Him. God watches over the righteous even though the wicked may be lurking to destroy them. God loves the righteous and will rain down His wrath upon the wicked. When David was pursued by Saul he could find no place of permanent safety. His only hope was to put his trust in God. David's faith in God protected him from temptation and perils. Others told David to flee to some place of safety. They saw safety only in flight. However, David saw God as his only hiding place. Instead of fleeing David continued in unwavering faith in God. David trusted God because he knew God was righteous and because he knew that he, himself was a righteous man. He had a good conscience. David saw God working from heaven through His providence in the affairs of men. God rules over mankind and He is very observant of what is happening in the world. God may delay but His hour of vengeance against the wicked will surely come. "The LORD always does right and wants justice done. Everyone who does right will see his face." God will punish the wicked. He will be the defender of the good and the upright.
Faith in God's protection -- Psalm 11:1-3: David said "The LORD is my fortress!" He did not want people saying to him, "Escape like a bird to the mountains!" Some people told David that the evil people had put their arrows on their bows and that they were aiming at good people to destroy them. The question was, "What can an honest person do when everything crumbles?" Our faith in God must be strong enough to stand when tested. Do we flee to the mountains or to God when the troubles come? David's faith was tested and he proved his faith in God. An example of David demonstrating deep faith in God was when he stood before Goliath. He said, "Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied." (1 Samuel 17:45) The depth of our faith is seen as we deal with the struggles of life. Those that said the foundation was being destroyed were building on the wrong foundation. The true foundation upon which we must build is the Rock of our salvation, the Lord God Almighty.
How God demonstrates righteousness -- Psalm 11:4-7: David described the true foundation saying, "The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men." (Psalms 11:4) David's advisors saw only the troubles that were around them and not the God that was above them. David could see, by faith, the hand of God coming in judgment against the wicked. "He will send fiery coals and flaming sulfur down on the wicked, and they will drink nothing but a scorching wind." David trusted God because of the relationship that he could maintain with Him through Temple sacrifices and purity of heart. David saw God at work through His providence in the affairs of men. In His time, God deals with all situations and all people. He sees those that are righteous as well as those that are wicked. He recompenses to each person properly. The nature of God demands that the righteous be blessed and the wicked be punished. Everyone will receive a just hearing; the righteous will be blessed and evil men will be punished.
We must put our trust in God and be righteous by means of salvation through the blood of Jesus. Please accept God's wonderful good news that Jesus died for your sins. Will you be baptized into Christ to put on Christ so that your sins can be forgiven by His blood? "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:26-27) Believers contact Christ's saving blood by being baptized into His death. Those that become children of God are then in a position to lift up the excellent name of the Almighty.
